RICS Success for Jonathan & Katie

Molly Blackburn

Celebrating double APC exam success to secure RICS Qualification for two of our Graduate Surveyors, Jonathan Hird & Katie Proctor.

H&H Land & Estates is delighted to acknowledge the successful qualification of two of its Carlisle based graduate surveyors.   Katie Proctor and Jonathan Hird have successfully completed their Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) exams to become chartered members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS).

Both have rural backgrounds and graduated from Harper Adams University with a BSc (Hons) in Rural Enterprise and Land Management.  They each spent their placement year working for H&H Land & Estates and, following completion of their degrees, both successfully obtained full-time positions with the company.

The APC is two years of structured practical training and professional development that ends with the Final Assessment. This ensures that candidates joining the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors are competent to practise as a Chartered Surveyor.  The designation of Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) is an internationally recognised and respected mark of professional excellence and integrity. It is down to their hard work and knowledge that Katie and Jonathan can now use the professional letters of MRICS after their names.

Katie grew up on her family’s livestock farm in Hexham, and has also been involved on their arable farm near Berwick-upon-Tweed. Currently, Katie works across all sectors of the business from land and estate management, to agricultural tenancies and compensation claims. Going forward, her aim is to use her knowledge to advise farmers and rural businesses on the opportunities available and routes to take to future-proof their businesses in these changing times. Commenting on her results she said:

“I am thrilled that I have achieved my MRICS professional status. Throughout both my placement year and while studying for my APC exams I received mentoring and advice from our professional teams. These have been key to helping me achieve this qualification. Now that I have reached this point in my career, I will focus on further developing my professional experience and building upon my skills already gained here at H&H Land & Estates.”

Jonathan is heavily involved in Caldbeck Young Farmers and has worked for H&H Land & Estates for three years.  Growing up and helping out on his parents’ beef and sheep farm near Caldbeck and mixed arable and livestock farm near Wigton, it was always his goal to become a rural land agent. Like Katie, Jonathan is involved across all areas of the business, with a specific focus on AMC, estate management, landlord and tenant and farm business advice. On successfully passing his APC exams, he said:

“Securing this professional qualification is for me a huge personal accomplishment, as I have always wanted to be a Rural Chartered Surveyor.  I have worked for the company for three years now – one on my placement year and two after completion of my degree – and the experience I have gained has been invaluable. I am looking forward to building my career and gaining recognition within the industry.”

H&H Land & Estates is a regularly acknowledged professional organisation operating across the rural, commercial and lifestyle property sectors. It is focused on supporting the next generation of rural and property professionals across its offices in Cumbria, the North of England and the Scottish Borders. It has a large team of qualified professionals, many of whom, like Katie and Jonathan, have established their careers with the company.

Colin Tomlinson, Managing Director of H&H Land & Estates adds: “We are so pleased to see two of our graduate surveyors reach what is recognised as the main professional industry milestone.  Here at H&H Land & Estates, we are very focused on supporting the next generation of rural surveyors, and Katie and Jonathan are exemplary examples.

“They both started their careers with us, and it has been a privilege to watch them work their way up the professional ladder, which commenced with their placement year.  I am fully aware that successfully completing these exams along with their day to day work is not an easy achievement so very well done to them both. Now they have completed their qualifications, I know that they will both start to forge out a professional path for themselves in their favoured disciplines.”

Offering a vast range of professional advice and services including Farm Business Advice, Land Management and Development and Land Agency, H&H Land & Estates is one of the largest firms of independent rural property advisors in the North of the UK.

  • Over the past few months, I’ve been dealing with Jenna to sort out some issues with a tenant that left and to find a new tenant for my property. You’ve been the managing agent for my flat since 2005 and the service that Jenna has given me recently has been nothing short of superb. She has promptly answered questions, given me reassurance and generally been a godsend over a fairly stressful time. You have a tremendous asset in Jenna.

  • From my first dealings with the valuer who came out to look at my property and telephone dealings with the staff in the office, I have had nothing but excellent service and I would like to thank them all for that. My biggest thanks must go to Gillian, who has helped me all the way from start to finish, she has gone beyond my expectations and helped me in every way possible, her enthusiasm and humour along with her professional service has made my experience of selling my property a very pleasant experience and for that I am very grateful.

There seemed to be a number of difficulties, but you overcame all these problems and got the timber extracted in good time, and sold it well - we were delighted with the cheques we received. So we wish to thank you warmly for all your efforts, your expertise and your thoroughly professional approach.
