Placement Makes Perfect

Louise Stones

Louise Stones has spent the last twelve months as an Assistant Surveyor at our Durham office. This has been part of her placement year at Harper Adams University where Louise is working towards a degree in Rural Enterprise and Land Management.

As Louise comes to the end of her placement, the benefits of a placement year have become increasingly clear, as she freely admits.

“I have gained invaluable experience with H&H Land & Estates which cannot be taught in a lecture and has given me a broader insight into this career. I have enjoyed meeting both clients and other professionals and been given lots of opportunities throughout,” she adds.

The work H&H Land & Estates provided was intentionally diverse – every day Louise experienced was different, with the intention of keeping the workload interesting, so she could gain as much practical experience as possible. The aspects covered included valuations, preparing agreements, sales, through to BPS applications, grant schemes and dispute resolution.

Claims compensation was a particular interest, and she was able to work on many different claims during the twelve months in Durham.

Placements are a challenge, with the change from university life to a working environment. The aim is to prepare the student for their final year of studies at Harper Adams, and for working life beyond. It is hoped, the broader range of knowledge leads the individual to make better informed decisions.

Louise agrees: “My time on placement has given me more confidence in my role, as working in a new position can push you out of your comfort zone but I don’t think I would have gained the same level of experience had I not had these opportunities. I would recommend for anyone to do a placement year during their studies, especially at H&H Land & Estates.”

Delighted with her progression, Tim Sedgewick, Associate and Chartered Surveyor at the Durham office of H&H Land and Property, said:

“A placement year gives individuals access to the industry, dovetailing with their studies at university. Not only that, but they also give a hands-on, practical experience at an early stage of their career, which stands them in good stead for when they finish university completely.

“Louise has been a tremendous asset to us, and we will support her where we can with any modules throughout her final year.

“Her placement has confirmed for her that she has made the right career choice, especially working in practice because of the vast rage of work which passes through. A full year in the industry prior to obtaining a degree puts graduates in a better position in relation to those without any experience. Most, like Louise, believe the extra year is definitely worth it.

“For us, it was good to nurture Louise in her placement year and I am proud that this will continue as we welcome her back full time as a Graduate Surveyor. It certainly will pay extra dividends for her, as she now has a career path to start when her studies finish.”

Louise concludes: “I am pleased that I have accepted a Graduate Surveyor role with H&H, and I look forward to returning to the company once I have completed my final year university studies”.
