Learning on the job!
Supporting the next generation, H&H Land & Estates employs its first land management apprentice.
Here at H&H Land & Estates, we are a company fully committed to fostering the talents of the next generation, and the latest addition to our team is Chartered Surveyor Apprentice, 19-year-old Abigail Gate.
Run in association with Harper Adams University, the Chartered Surveyor Rural Degree Apprenticeship Programme will give Abigail the best of both worlds. Her academic tuition will be delivered by a first-rate university, and the equally important hands-on experience will be gained through working with our highly experienced land agents. Upon successful completion of this five-year apprenticeship programme, Abigail will gain a BSc (Hons) in Rural Enterprise and Land Management, and then progress to the APC for full Chartered Membership of the RICS as part of the End Point Assessment.
The course involves ongoing study throughout, with apprentices spending four weeks each year at Harper Adams, which is one of the leading universities in the UK for rural practitioners. Whilst working within the H&H Land & Estate office, based in Carlisle, Abigail will work across all areas of the business. She will be mentored by Emma Smith, Chartered Surveyor and Mike Dyke an Environmental and Woodland Advisor.
Coming from a farming background on her father’s side, Abigail went to school in Penrith. After successfully completing her A Levels in Environmental Science, Biology, and Drama, she wasn’t sure whether or not to go to university, so she took a gap year. It was when she got back from her travels that she saw the job with H&H Land & Estates advertised.
“I couldn’t believe my luck - It looked like the dream programme for me,” said Abigail, “and I applied straight away.
I am so excited starting work with H&H as I know that for me the apprenticeship route will work much better than a full-time university course. I am really interested in land management, particularly the environmental side of the business, so I can’t wait to get stuck into the programme.”
At H&H Land & Estates, we offer a broad range of land agency services, including help with AMC applications and property valuation, as well as significant expertise in Common Land, mines and minerals, environmental conservation and woodland schemes.
We pride ourselves on the work we do to educate and develop new entrants into the profession. We regularly employ Harper Adams students for work placements, many of whom have returned to work with us full time after completing their degree.
“I am really looking forward to supporting and working with Abigail” enthuses Emma. “I know from first-hand experience how much you can learn from working with knowledgeable colleagues. As a company we are totally committed to everyone’s professional development and seeing Abigail’s obvious interest and enthusiasm for land management, I am sure she will do really well as part of our team.”
Operating across northern England and southern Scotland, we have offices in Carlisle, Cockermouth, Durham, Kendal, Keswick and Penrith. Our team are committed to offering both expert professional advice and exemplary service.
